Enter watt-hours when available. If the battery label shows volts and amp-hours, multiply them to estimate watt-hours. Example: 48 volts × 10 amp-hours = 480 watt-hours. Use total rider-plus-cargo load, then choose the conditions closest to the hardest normal leg.

How many watt-hours does an electric bike need?

There is no universal number. The calculator estimates a minimum from the trip, combined load, terrain, assist demand, weather, and desired reserve. Use the recommended shopping target as a screening gate, then verify the exact battery and route.

Should I buy the largest battery available?

Not automatically. Extra capacity can add price and weight. Buy enough documented capacity for the hardest repeat trip with reserve, while keeping the complete bike manageable and serviceable.

Why is this estimate lower than an advertised range?

Maximum-range claims may rely on lighter loads, low assistance, moderate speeds, flat terrain, warm weather, and ideal tire pressure. This calculator deliberately uses a planning range and exposes conditions that can consume reserve.
